Alphonse Pyramus de Candolle

Alphonse Louis Pierre de Candolle Pyrame ( born October 28, 1806 Paris, † April 4, 1893 in Geneva) was a Swiss botanist and sociologist of science. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A.DC. ".

Life and work

The son of Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame originally studied law at the University of Geneva, where he was Honorary Professor of Botany in 1831 and in 1835 took over the chair of his father. He led his work Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis as editor on. Together with his son Casimir Pyramus de Candolle, he published several botanical works.

Curator of the herbarium de Candolle was 1884-1924, the botanist Robert Buser.

Unusually for a botanist was his involvement with the field of sociology of science. In his book Histoire des sciences et des savants depuis deux siècles de Candolle analyzed the conditions that lead to outstanding scientists can develop. He examined among other things the influence of heredity, social status, the political environment and religion.

Honors

1889 Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London awarded him. On August 17, 1891 he was admitted as a foreign member of the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts. In 1836 he was elected to the Leopoldina.

According to him the genus Alphonsea was Hook.f. et Thomson named.
