Alpine Brigade Tridentina

The Alpini Brigade Tridentina was one of the past five Mountaineer Brigade of the Italian Army. The associations of the brigade were stationed in South Tyrol. The name " Tridentina " refers to Venezia Tridentina, the old name of present-day region of Trentino -Alto Adige, where the brigade was located. Today, a division headquarters for operations abroad bears the name of the former brigade.

History

The brigade was erected in 1923 as the 2nd Alpini Group, from 1926 the term 2 Alpini Brigade led and consisted of the 5th, 6th and 7th Alpini Regiment, and the 2nd Mountain Artillery Regiment. 1935 emerged from the brigade the 2nd Alpini Division Tridentina, which consisted now only from the 5th and 6th Alpini Regiment and the artillery regiment mentioned. The 7th Alpini Regiment was formed together with the new 11th Regiment, the new Alpini Division Pusteria.

During the Second World War the division fought among others in the Soviet Union, where they 1942/1943 in a massive Soviet tank attack -on-Don (Operation Little Saturn) was cut along with other Alpini associations of their own lines and then in heavy frost two weeks in enemy lines fought until they were able to build their own troops decimated again.

1951 was the Tridentina as Brigade with the 6th Alpini Regiment and the 2nd Mountain Artillery Regiment in Brixen again. In the 1950s and 1960s, the brigade led some blocking and anti-tank organizations. The brigade had to fight during the Cold War, the task in the case of an attack of the Warsaw Pact, the possibly collapsing in Val Pusteria enemy. Accompanying support had done in Merano (Brenner, Jaufenpass, Vinschgau ) and Cadore in Belluno (Dolomites), the Alpini Brigades Orobica.

With the army reform of 1975, the regiment level was abolished in the Italian army. Therefore, the brigade was in the years 1976-1990 from the Alpini battalions Bassano and Trento, out of the blocking association Val Brenta, from the mountain artillery battalions Vicenza and Asiago, from the logistics battalion Tridentina and some disposal and supply units.

1991 solved the Italian army to the Alpini Brigade Orobica, whereupon the Tridentina for South Tyrol was responsible. 1992 took the battalions of the regiment name. In the 1990s, the brigade consisted of the following regiments:

  • 5th Alpini Regiment ( Sterzing )
  • 6th Alpini Regiment ( Innichen and Toblach)
  • 11 Alpini Regiment ( Brunico )
  • 18th Alpini Regiment training ( Merano )
  • 5th Mountain Artillery Regiment ( Merano )
  • Logistics battalion Tridentina ( Brixen )

As of 2000, the Brigade was gradually reduced. The artillery regiment, the 11th Alpini Regiment and logistics battalion were completely resolved from the 6th Alpini Regiment was a part of active education association of mountain troops commands in Bolzano, who also oversees some practice sites in Val Pusteria. The training unit in Merano first went also to the mountain troops command and was later dissolved. The 5th Alpini Regiment in Sterzing is now under the relatively distant Alpini Brigade Julia Udine. According to the official dissolution of the Brigade in 2002 took over a new division headquarters for operations abroad names and traditions of the brigade or the former division.
