Alskog Church

The Church of Alskog (Swedish Alskogs kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland. It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Guard in the diocese of Visby.

Location

The church is located in the southeastern inland of Gotland on the road 144 from Hemse after Ljugarn. It is located 40 km southeast of Visby, 19 km northeast of Hemse and 4.5 km west of Ljugarn.

Church building

The church is a church saddle. There were originally at the site of a church with a nave without vault. The single nave dates from the early 13th century. It was rebuilt in the late 13th century and in this case provided with a vault. The tower in the west was added in the late 13th century. By 1300 around a choir was added with sacristy, which is larger than the nave. The construction of a large nave, however, never came to execution. Choir and nave still have original portals on the south, the tower has a portal in the west. The three interconnected window in the east wall of the chancel contain stained glass from the 14th century.

1964 and 1965, the church designed by the architect Karl Erik Hjalmarson has been renovated.

Equipment

In the church there is a triumphal crucifix from the late 12th or early 13th century, which is believed that it already comes from an earlier church on the same level Hort. The altarpiece is from 1759. Baptismal font from the early 13th century depicts scenes from the childhood of Jesus represents the pulpit from 1586 is one of the oldest on Gotland.

The grave box ( swedish Gravkistan ) is a rare form of burial that occurs from the 6th to 12th century AD, and disappears in the older form with the Christianization. These monuments have been found on Gotland on pagan cemeteries and churches. So also the visual rich stone SHM 5038 in Alskog kyrka.

Environment

The churchyard wall contains a well-preserved medieval portal in the east.
