Altan (Band)

Altan is a group of Irish folk music from Ireland.

Band History

During the summer holidays the flutist Frankie Kennedy learned the singer and violinist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, whom he eventually married in 1981. Together with other musicians Altan was founded. In 1983 they released their first album Ceol Aduaidh. Kennedy died in 1994. Subsequently, the sound of the band was more heavily influenced by Dermot Byrne accordion. 1999 married Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Byrne.

Musically, the style of the group is very traditional applied, and they interpret the music of her homeland in County Donegal at a rapid pace. Character defining the very clear voice of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and the insinuating voice Dáithí Sproules.
