Alternate Reality (series)

Alternate Reality is a series of fantasy computer role- playing game developer Philip Price. However, of the seven planned episodes have appeared in the distribution of Datasoft only two ( The City and The Dungeon ). Both games were a landmark in appearance in the field of computer role-playing games with respect to graphics and game atmosphere.

The City

First programmed for Atari 800 ( XL / XE) and published in 1985, the game has developed quickly into a bestseller. Contributed significantly to the epic opening credits, the atmospheric background music by Gary Gilbertson, a sophisticated game system, manifold possibilities of interaction with the game world and the then novel real-time based pseudo- three-dimensional graphical implementation.

Abducted by a spaceship in a city on an alien planet the player tries his character in The City for the adventure in the other Alternate Reality prepare consequences. This includes for example the compilation of the best possible equipment and achieving a high level of experience.

Due to the great success of The City has been ported to almost all the then popular 8 -bit and 16 -bit computer systems. Moreover, Datasoft was to support and inform the player an accompanying brochure and subscription- called Alternate Reality Newsletter out.

The Dungeon

Because of business differences between Datasoft and Philip Price was the second part, The Dungeon, mainly designed and programmed by Ken Jordan and Dan Pinal. As the very first part Gary Gilbertson took over the creation of the games music. It was published in 1987, initially only for the Atari 8- bit computer.

The gameplay has been moved to The Dungeon in the underworld of the city. Players who possessed both parties, were able to move freely back and forth between the two games, so the two games functioned as one big game.

More parts

According to Philip Price should allow the unpublished parts of the player to prepare his return to the home planet and eventually to compete.
