Alto Orinoco Municipality

Alto Orinoco is a municipality in the state of Amazonas, Venezuela, has an area of ​​49,217 km ² and about 14,222 inhabitants ( estimates for 2008 ). Headquartered in the village of La Esmeralda. The Orinoco River has its origin on the eastern border of the community.

Population

Several Native American ethnic groups have their home in the community. The most important are the Yanomamö and the Yekuana.

Economy

The natives lived and still live in part often as hunters and gatherers. The - mostly illegal - gold and diamond mining has increased dramatically in recent years. Here are many Venezuelans, but also involved Brazilians and Colombians.
