Altolamprologus

Altolamprologus calvus

Altolamprologus ( Latin: " altus " = high, so high Lamprologus ) is a two described species, genus in the family of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). You are in Lake Tanganyika where they live in endemic habitat of rock and rubble shore. They are also known as Nanderbuntbarsche in German because of their external resemblance to the unspecified related Nanderbarschen ( Nandidae ).

Features

The fish have, as an adaptation to prey capture in narrow crevices, a hochrückige, laterally strongly flattened shape. The mouth is deeply divided and runs from the tip of the instrument obliquely downward. It is strongly vorstülpbar ( protaktil ). The males are 12 to 13 centimeters long, the females remain considerably smaller at 7 inches.

Like most species of the tribe Lamprologini also breed the Altolamprologus hidden and lay their eggs in 100 to 200 small caves or columns in the straight fit females.

Species

  • Altolamprologus calvus (Poll, 1978), has 7-8 dark transverse bands, fins with shining points, scales on the neck immediately before the dorsal fin.
  • Altolamprologus compressiceps ( Boulenger, 1898), has 6-7 dark transverse bands, black fins, scales on the neck from the posterior edge to the dorsal fin. From Altolamprologus compressiceps there is a color variant of the Zambian shores of Lake Tanganyika, with bright yellow head, which is the gold head compressiceps commercially.
  • A previously undescribed species, Altolamprologus sp. " Sumbu " also comes from the south of Lake Tanganyika. These animals are only 5-7 inches long.
  • Research shows that too Neolamprologus fasciatus, a cichlid from a related, non- monophyletic genus, which has a similar shape as Altolamprologus, but is less built up, the genus Altolamprologus must be attributed.

Outer systematics

Altolamprologus is one of the few safe monophyletic genus in the tribe Lamprologini. The sister genus is Lepidolamprologus, a genus with cylindrical body shape. Together with Lepidolamprologus, the basal standing "snail cichlids " and some other Lamprologus and Neolamprologus species forms a monophyletic clade within the Altolamprologus Lamprologini, which is characterized by an ossified cartilage lip.
