Amalafrida

Amalafrida (* 460, † 525 ) was the sister of the Ostrogoth Theodoric the Great.

Soon after the death of her first husband Amalafrida was married in the year 500 in a second marriage with the Vandal king Thrasamund when he formed an alliance with Theodoric. Both spouses were Arians. Probably from her first husband Amalafrida had her son and her daughter Theodahad Amalaberga. These two children were back in Italy, when Amalafrida, went in the company of many Gothic warriors that they had received from the Ostrogoth to her second husband to North Africa. To her rich dowry included the Sicilian port city of Lilybaeum.

After Thrasamunds death in 523 Amalafrida fled from his successor Hilderic, but they capture, initially jailed and had to kill 525 together with its gothic entourage. Probably Hilderic had in it a danger sees, because he had broken with Theodoric and was turned away from Arianism.

Amalafridas Amalaberga daughter was around 510 became the wife of the Thuringian king Herminafried. Her son Theodahad was the last male descendant of the ostgotischer as Amali 534-536 King.
