Amalia of Cleves

Amalia of Cleves -Jülich - Berg ( born October 17, 1517 Dusseldorf, † March 1, 1586 ibid ) was a princess of the house of the Mark. She was the youngest child of Duke Johann III. and Maria of Jülich († 1543) was born.

Life

Hans Holbein portrayed Amalia and her older sister, Anne of Cleves, to which both - located on a bride - English king Henry VIII in the picture provided. The king chose the portrait of Anna Amalia's sister and married.

Amalia of Cleves served in the following years as the mercy of dynastic interests. There lengthy negotiations with the Margrave of Baden have been made in relation to a marriage alliance between the two dynasties, but led to no result. Amalia was therefore associated with any legitimate sovereigns.

Miscellaneous

Amalia of Cleves also appeared as the author of a book of songs. The original is preserved in the State Library in Berlin, a copy of which in the Frankfurt City and University Library.
