Amami Islands

The Amami Islands (Japanese奄 美 诸岛, Amami - shotō ) are part of the Nansei Islands.

Geography

The Amami Islands are located between the Tokara Islands and the Okinawa Islands.

History

From 1945 to 1953, the archipelago was under American occupation and was returned in 1953 as a " Christmas present " to Japan.

Language

The language spoken by the inhabitants of Amami dialect belongs to the Ryukyu languages.

Among the endemic species of the archipelago include the Amami rabbit ( Pentalagus furnessi ), and the Amami Woodcock ( Scolopax mira ).
