Amar Quartet

The Amar Quartet was a company based in Frankfurt am Main String Quartet. It existed from 1921 until 1929. 1 The violin was played by the Hungarian violinist Licco Amar, the second violin Walter Kaspar. Violist of the quartet was Paul Hindemith, the cello played 1921/1922 Rudolf Hindemith and 1922-1929 Maurits Frank.

The Amar Quartet at first had only come together to interpret the Second String Quartet by Paul Hindemith. It quickly became one of the major quartets of the interwar period. It has rendered outstanding services primarily to contemporary music and frequently appeared at the Donaueschingen Music Days. It has premiered numerous works of contemporary music.

Until its dissolution, the quartet in newspapers and magazines of the Weimar Republic has been widely shown in the drawing by Paul Hindemith friend and groomsmen, the painter Rudolf Heinisch.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Paul Hindemith Hindemith Institute in Frankfurt over bore the name of the ensemble in 1995 to the Amar Quartet ( Zurich ).
