Ambassador

An ambassador (French ambassadeur, Eng. Ambassador ) is a diplomat, so the top civil servant representatives of a State in another country or to an international organization. He is appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is the personal representative of the head of state of his country. The diplomatic corps of a country is by the most senior ambassador, the doyen headed, if not the apostolic nuncio was determined by the receiving State to the Dean.

Agendas and position of ambassador

His job as head of a message is to represent the interests of his country against the host country, which requires a close relationship with the government, opposition and social organizations in the host country. To enable full advocacy, ambassadors is granted as diplomatic immunity. The representative residence of the ambassador and his family is called the residence and is how the message no extraterritorial area of the host country, but in terms of its inviolability to protect the embassy compound assimilated (Article 1, letter i WÜD ).

An ambassador is located in a sometimes difficult balancing act, since it is made a part of the policy in his distant home state with charge (though he from abroad has it hardly influence), on the other hand, he should maintain good relations and provide important information about its host state. Whether and how these analyzes are then actually used by the departments of their own State Department, he can hardly influence from afar.

Foreign ambassadors are usually addressed as " Excellency ". Compared with the ambassadors of their own country to use simply " Madam Ambassador " respectively " Mr. Ambassador ". An Apostolic Nuncio, a papal legate in the rank of Ambassador, is traditionally addressed as " Reverend Excellency ". The totality of the diplomatic staff in a host country is called Diplomatic Corps.

Germany

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany are appointed by the Federal President of the higher officials External Action Service. All ambassadors from Grade A 16 shall apply in accordance with § 54 Section 1 No. 2 of the Federal Civil Service Act as political officials, so they can at any time be put into temporary retirement, provided they are appointed for life. In contrast to other countries very rarely former politicians are appointed ambassadors in Germany traditionally. Among the few exceptions include the former Bundestag President Philipp Jenninger (CDU ), former Minister of State in the Foreign Office Ursula Seiler- Albring (FDP) and the former Federal Education Minister Annette Schavan ( CDU).

The salary of the head of the German missions abroad depends on the size and importance of the host country, ranging from ambassadors (or consuls-general ) ( BesGr A15 ) to ambassadors ( BesGr B9). The heads of major embassies, such as in Washington, Paris, Beijing or Moscow or the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations are measured by grade B9 ( for comparison: Secretary of State, BesGr B 11); but there are also small messages, such as Gabon or Botswana, where the Ambassador of the grade BesGr A15 is grouped. Also, the Ambassadors are entitled to a basic salary dependent allowance in their level of which depends on the distance from Germany and the risks in the host country ( for example, Germany's neighbors: Level 1, whereas Afghanistan: Level 20).
