Ambatondrazaka

Ambatondrazaka is a city in the east of Madagascar. The place is about 150 kilometers from the capital Antananarivo.

The city lies south of Lake Alaotra in the hills. It is the administrative seat of Alaotra Mangoro region and trade center of the region. Amabatondrazaka has its own airfield two kilometers north of the city.

The population grew from 18,044 (1975 ) on 27 711 (1993 ) inhabitants. The current estimates vary widely. Probably the city has about 50,000 inhabitants. The locals are among the Sihanaka and Tsimihety. But many Sakalava and Betsimisaraka have migrated from the west coast respectively.

The railway line in the capital is currently not in operation, but should be repaired.

Religion

Since 1959, the city is the seat of a Catholic bishop and is the seat of the diocese Ambatondrazaka.
