Amberg–Schmidmühlen railway

The railway line Amberg- Schmidmühlen was a 21 km long branch line in the southern district of Amberg -Sulzbach from Amberg along the Vils until after Schmidmühlen.

Although already in 1904 the legal basis for the local railway line had been created, the Amberg should connect along the Vils with Schmidmühlen, it was because of the numerous disputes over details but also about a planned extension to the High Castle in Lauterachtal significant delays. The first section to Ensdorf, the Drahthammer branched off at the station of the line to Lauterhofen, was opened on 1 May 1910. The second part then followed on 18 December 1910 so that the total length of the route now was 21 kilometers. However, passenger trains began already in Amberg, so the ride was much longer by two kilometers.

Passenger services were set on the rail on July 1, 1966 With the increased use of rail buses in the fifties and sixties. The freight remained much longer; but only for a customer - which belongs to the Maxhiitte lime plant in Vilshofen. Here at times drove heavy freight trains, which required three diesel locomotives of the series 211. But that was on 28 May 1988 to the end; south of Vilshofen the section rested since 31 May 1985.

The route was established in 1990 after the acquisition removed by the county and rebuilt 1991-1992 at a bike path.
