Ambrose De Paoli

Ambrose Battista De Paoli ( born August 19, 1934 in Jeanette, Pennsylvania, USA, † October 10, 2007 in Miami, Florida ) was a Vatican diplomat and last Apostolic Nuncio in Australia.

Life

Ambrose Battista De Paoli was ordained a priest on December 18, 1960 in Miami. From 1964 to 1966 he attended the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy and received his doctorate with a dissertation submitted in 1965 on the subject property laws of the State of Florida Affecting the Church at the Pontifical Lateran University in canon law. In 1966 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He has worked in papal missions in Zambia, Venezuela, Canada and the Vatican Secretariat of State. On April 11, 1967, he gave Pope Paul VI. the honorary title of Honorary Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

Pope John Paul II awarded him on February 7, 1980, title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness and appointed him on 23 September 1983, Titular Archbishop of Lares and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Sri Lanka. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Agostino Casaroli.

In the following years he was Apostolic Delegate, from 1994 nuncio in South Africa ( 1988-1997 ), Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Lesotho ( 1988-1997 ), Apostolic Nuncio in Swaziland (1993-1997), Apostolic Delegate, from 1996 Nuncio, in Namibia (1994-1997) and Apostolic Delegate in Botswana ( 1994-1997). From 1997 to 2004 he was nuncio in Japan, Apostolic Nuncio in Australia since 2004.

De Paoli died as a result of a 2005 diagnosed leukemia at a hospital in Miami.
