Ambrosius Pelargus

Ambrose Pelargus OP ( born Ambrose stork or Storgk ) (c. 1493/94 in Nidda, † July 5, 1561 in Trier ) was a Dominican theologian and controversial.

About his origins and youth nothing is known, not even when he entered the Dominican convent in Frankfurt. In the Heidelberg Universitätsmatrikeln there is an entry dated 5 March 1519 Fr Ambrose Stork ex Conventu Franckfurdensi Ordinis predicatorum. Since in Cologne in 1524, he wrote a preface to John Dieterich Bergers polemic De votis monasticis iudicium, he used the name Graecized Pelargus.

From 1525/26 he studied theology in Basel and from 1529 in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he in 1533 for Doctor of Divinity. doctorate. He had published several pamphlets on the Eucharist doctrine against the Reformers Zwingli and Oecolampadius. From 1529 he quarreled with the refugees from Freiburg Erasmus of Rotterdam, but was friendly after mediation by Ludwig Baer in 1533 with this. In 1539 he published an anthology of his controversial writings and correspondence with Erasmus.
