Johann Ludwig von Hagen

Johann Ludwig von Hagen ( 1492 Pfalzel *, † March 23, 1547 in Ehrenbreitstein ), son of Kurtrierer bailiff Friedrich von Hagen. When Johann Ludwig IV, he was from 1540 to 1547 Elector and Archbishop of Trier.

Life

He served from 1510 numerous functions in the archdiocese of Trier and studied in Paris and Cologne. On August 9, 1540 Johann Ludwig von Hagen, after the death of Archbishop and Elector Johann III. elected by Metzenhausen the new archbishop and elector. In his choice already ill, Johann Ludwig IV devoted mainly ecclesiastical duties during his reign. He tried to fight the spreading Reformation in the Electorate of Trier. In 1546 he was drawn into the war against the Smalcald League and parts of the electorate, especially Koblenz and surroundings, were devastated.

Johann Ludwig IV von Hagen was buried in the Cathedral of Trier. His tomb was destroyed in 1804.
