History

The association was founded in 1963. This is not a real foundation but rather a merger of the American Rocket Society predecessor organizations ( ARS), American Interplanetary Society (AIS ) and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences ( IAS ), which were established in the early 1930s.

Activity

The association is a member of the International Astronautical Federation and maintains partnerships with other organizations in the field of aerospace, such as the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics. As part of the AIAA Foundation scholarships for college students will be awarded. The work of the AIAA is geographically into seven regions (north - east, south -east, central, south-central, mid- western, western and international ) can be subdivided.

The Association awards since 1964, the " Wyld Propulsion Award" ( until 1975 under the name " James H. Wyld Propulsion Award" ) for outstanding achievements in the development or application of rocket propulsion systems.
