American Line

The American Line was the largest US-based shipping company of their time. The company is headquartered in Philadelphia operate scheduled services on the transatlantic route between North America and Europe and existed from 1872 until 1925.

History

The company was founded in 1872 as American Steamship Company in Philadelphia. The cruise line began, initially set up with charter vessels, passenger and cargo services to Queenstown and Liverpool. This line services were renamed from the beginning under the name American Line. Already in 1884, passenger numbers and freight volumes were reduced as far as on the transatlantic route to Philadelphia that, also from Philadelphia International Navigation Company, the American Line took over. In 1900, J. P. acquired Morgan the parent company and named it 1904 in International Mercantile Marine Company in order. Under the roof of the American Line was operated together with shipping companies such as Red Star Line, White Star Line, Dominion Line, Atlantic Transport Line or the Leyland Line. By 1925, all services of the American Line have been set.
