Dominion Line

The Dominion Line was a British shipping company with headquarters in Liverpool. The company operated a transatlantic liner service to New Orleans, and later by the Canadian East Coast ports (Montréal, Québec, etc.).

History

1870, the shipping company was as Mississippi Steamship Company Ltd.. established to maintain a regular service from Liverpool to New Orleans. 1872 Opening of the services to Canada was the shipping company's name in Mississippi & Dominion Steamship Company Ltd.. changed with time but came into use, the term Dominion Line. The ships were identifiable by a red chimney with black cap and a white band in the upper red part.

Initially, the company operated the route Liverpool - New Orleans with stops in Bordeaux, Lisbon and Havana, this service was operated until 1914. 1872 opened the shipping service to Canada, the route ran from Liverpool to Queenstown -Québec and Montréal, from 1886 also Belfast and Londonderry were traveling approached, but omitted Queenstown. The services in the United States were expanded and the ports of Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore inserted the line network.

The ships of the line were mostly medium-sized passenger ships, but also some cargo ships belonged to the fleet. From the 1890s, then the ships from the tonnage began to grow here, so in 1898 the New England 11394 GRT and the Commonwealth from 1900 to 12097 GRT were signs of positive development. In 1902 the Dominion Line by the U.S. banker JP Morgan bought and 1904 joined the IMMC - Maritime Trust.

Within the IMMC trusts but was the White Star Line shipping company expanded to the only passenger, so the Dominion Line their largest passenger ships had to give up on the White Star. By 1914, the shipping company was only represented by small ships and lost more and more important. 1914, passenger services were discontinued and on the freight sector to the Leyland Line was subordinate. In 1915, the IMMC bankrupt and was handed over to the trusteeship of the U.S. government.

1920, the British shipping companies were spun off, including the remnants of the Dominion Line. The Leyland Line took over the Dominion cargo ships and the White Star Line operate their service to Canada under the brand name White Star - Dominion. 1926, the Dominion name has been deleted and the shipping company ceased to exist.
