Skerryvore

Skerryvore is a small Scottish island rock. It is a part of the group of islands of the Inner Hebrides and belongs administratively to the Unitary Authority Argyll and Bute. Skerryvore is about 15 km southwest of the southern tip of Tiree and 40 km west of Iona. The island is surrounded by several smaller rocky islands, some of which occur only at low tide. It measures about 50 m × 20 m and consists of syenitischem gneiss. The surface is rough and crossed by furrows.

Skerryvore Lighthouse

In June 1838, started the construction of the Skerryvore lighthouse, under the engineer Alan Stevenson. The construction work on the small rocks lasted under adverse conditions until 1844. The construction workers who lived in a specially built hut on stilts, and the subsequent lighthouse keepers were the only inhabitants Skerryvores. After a devastating fire, the lighthouse fell from 1954-1959. Since 1994 he has been automated and unoccupied. The Skerryvore Lighthouse is the most beautiful lighthouse in Scotland and is sorted into the Scottish lists of monuments in the highest category A.
