American Splendor

American Splendor is an American comic magazine, published since 1976 by Harvey Pekar, who also wrote all the published stories. The drawings are by various artists including Robert Crumb.

Content

Pekar always describes events and people from his personal environment. So his wife Joyce and their common Brabner adopted daughter Danielle occur. It is only because of problems with friends and family and also to everyday money or health problems.

The biggest success was the band created together with his wife, Our Cancer Year of the cancer disease of Pekar in which he tried to present every aspect of the disease as truthfully as possible, even the suicide thoughts. The stories have been widely published and issued in book form.

Publication

The magazine is published at irregular intervals since 1976, have been published 39 editions, the last in September 2008. Initially Pekar published the booklets published by the author, 1994-2002 Dark Horse Comics took over the publication. 2006 and 2008 published two four-part miniseries about American Splendor at Vertigo. Since 1986, also published six collections issues with changing publishers.

Filming

2003 established an award-winning film adaptation under the title American Splendor. The role of Pekar took Paul Giamatti, Joyce Brabner was played by Hope Davis. Was directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman.

Awards

The band Our Cancer Year award in 1995 with the Harvey Award for Best Graphic Novel.
