The full name is " Harvey Kurtzman Awards", after one of the founders of MAD magazine and simultaneous inventor of Alfred E. Neumann. They are among the oldest and most important awards in the comics industry.

The Harvey Awards were established in 1988 on the initiative of Fantagraphics Books into life after the Kirby Awards were set in the previous year. From the respective nominees selected by a jury of professionals from the comic book industry in a public vote those five in a certain category, which then come shortlisted in which, finally, the winners will be determined.
