Basil Wolverton

Basil Wolverton ( born July 9, 1909 in Central Point, Oregon, † December 31, 1978 in Vancouver, Washington) was an American cartoonist, illustrator and cartoonist.

Life and work

Wolverton, who had received no artistic training, though published his first drawing already in 1926 in the magazine America's humor, his first comics Space Hawks and Disk -Eyes appeared but only twelve years later, after he had already established itself as a newspaper artist professionally. He created his first comedic series in 1941 for Marvel Comics. In 1954, he recorded briefly for MAD and subsequently for Panic, before retiring from the comics industry to work as a cartoonist and illustrator.

With his particular style Wolverton influenced many underground artists. Among his most famous drawings was an allusion to Al Capps strip Li'l Abner, titled Lena the Hyena, which was mapped in 1946 on the cover of the magazine Life. In German the series Cherry Bim is of Wolverton, among others in the 1950s appeared in various publications of Alfons Semrau Verlag. The subscribed by him, the biblical story for young and old appeared in the 1970s. In 1991 Wolverton was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame. In 2000, the entry into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame took place.
