An American is a thriller novel by James Ellroy and the predecessor of the subsequent seamlessly novel An American Nightmare.

Action

In An American thriller about the criminal entanglements of Mafia, Government, FBI and CIA. The story starts exactly five years before the assassination of John F. Kennedy and ends immediately before the fatal shooting. The main characters are the hulking Pete Bondurant, the elegant FBI agent Kemper Boyd and the initially idealistic FBI agent Ward Littel. We learn why the attack on Cuba ( Bay of Pigs ) failed, as JFK came to his wives, and why J. Edgar Hoover hated the Communists, but in the Mafia a blind eye.

Despite the used historical facts, names, and events are in the actual plot of the novel are pure fiction.
