Aminopenicillin

Aminopenicillins are drugs, which are used as antibiotics. They are characterized by the attachment of an amino group on the benzyl penicillin. This chemical modification leads to an extension of the activity spectrum. The main agent of aminopenicillins are amoxicillin and ampicillin.

Aminopenicillins are not β - lactamase - stable. Their efficacy against gram-positive bacteria is only about one-half to one-fifth of the Benzylpenicillins, but they are about four to ten times more effective against gram -negative organisms. Aminopenicillins is well tolerated and can be used orally.

Aminopenicillins are:

  • Amoxicillin
  • Ampicillin
  • Bacampicillin
  • Pivampicillin
  • Sultamicillin

Acylaminopenicillins are chemically similar but have an extension of the spectrum also have an effect on gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria.
