Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 36 to 44 millimeters. The basal region of the forewing upper side shows a light gray to ash-gray color. The bordered by bright lines cross midfield stands out in dark brown to reddish-brown tints clearly. The Postdiskalregion and Submarginalregion color coordinated approximated the basal region, but sometimes show a faint pink Überstäubung. Kidney and ring stain are large, predominantly light gray filled and edged thin. The hind wings are gray -white in color, slightly darkened toward the outer edge.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars are pale reddish brown and show an indistinct dark dorsal line and a narrow yellowish sidelines.

Similar Species

Sister species of butterflies Ammoconia reisseri Ronkay & Varga, 1984 lacks the dark center field on the front upper wing surface. Since A. reisseri found only in Crete and southern part of the Peloponnese, there is no geographical overlap with the home to Cyprus Ammoconia aholai. Although Ammoconia innominate Ronkay & Varga, 1984 shows a darkened midfield, but is also not represented in Cyprus.

Distribution and habitat

Ammoconia aholai is isolated against Cyprus. The animals are to be found mainly on warm slopes or dry grasslands.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation in the fall. At night they visit artificial light sources and bait. About other lifestyle habits, as well as details of the first stalls is currently little known. However, the egg is given as overwintering stage for occurring in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean species of the genus Ammoconia.
