Ammonia-borane is a chemical compound selected from the group of the boranes.
Production and representation
The reaction of the present as diborane tetrahydrofuran complex with ammonia yields mainly the diammonium salt [ H2B (NH3 ) 2] , ( BH4) -. However, when used instead of borane, diborane, the result is ammonia-borane.
Properties
Ammonia-borane has a structure similar to that of ethane, the large difference between the melting point of the two compounds by the highly polar nature of ammonia-borane takes place. The BN distance is 1.58 Å, the BH distance 1.15 Å and the NH distance 0.96 Å.
Use
Ammonia-borane is discussed as a storage substance to hydrogen gas as a fuel for vehicles. The hydrogen can be released by heating, which is decomposed into first ( NH2BH2 ) n and then ( NHBH ) n. Its hydrogen storage density is higher than liquid hydrogen.
Ammonia-borane is also used in organic synthesis as a stable variant of diborane.
