Beach grass (Ammophila ) is a plant genus of the family Gramineae ( Poaceae ). The name Ammophila is also the name of a sand wasp from the family of grave wasps ( Sphecidae ).

Description

The species of the genus beach oats are rhizomatous, perennial herbaceous plant with plant height of between 20 and about 130 centimeters. The Halmknoten are bald. The sharply pointed, blue - green leaf blades are long and narrow in width and usually rolled in about 2 to 5 millimeters. The membranous ligule ( ligules ) are not fringed, unpruned and about 1 to 30 millimeters long.

The inflorescence is a compact panicle, which can reach up to 30 centimeters in length. Is allseitswendig and contracted. The hairy spikelets 9-15 mm long and flattened on the back. The two tapered and grannenlosen glume of the hermaphrodite florets are more or less the same design and protrude from the lemmas. The lower glume is einnervig, the top is one to three annoying. The hairless, three to five annoying lemmas have awns. The awns are not kinked. The ungekielten palea are usually four annoying and relatively long. The flowers have three between 4-5 millimeters long stamens and two scars. The ovaries are bald. The medium-sized, egg-shaped fruits ( caryopses ) are longitudinally grooved and somewhat flattened. The flowering season is from May to July.

Dissemination

The genus occurs with three species on the coasts of the Atlantic and its seas in Europe, North Africa and North America but also in Australia and Hawaii naturalized.

Link ), occurs on the Atlantic coast of Europe including Baltic and North Sea and in the Mediterranean and in North America, Australia and naturalized in Hawaii. There are two subspecies: Ammophila arenaria subsp. arenaria, comes on the Atlantic coast south to Spain before.
  • Ammophila arenaria subsp. arundinacea H.Lindb. , occurs in the Mediterranean and on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands.
