Amos Lake

BW

Amos Lake is a small lake south of Thulla Point on Signy Iceland, an island of the South Orkney Islands in the South Atlantic.

Amos Lake is one of the lakes of Signy Islands which have been studied intensively. Radiocarbon dating of basic sediments of the lake indicate that the lake is less than 12,000 years ago originated. Many of the lakes on the island suffer from eutrophication caused by animals ( about a rich growth of aquatic plants caused by excessive nutrient levels in the water ), with Amos Lake and Heywood Lake are the hardest hit. In spring and summer the water of Amos Lake blossomed due to increased nutrient enrichment with a dense phytoplankton growth.

The UK Antarctic Place -Names Committee named the lake after Stephen C. Amos, a limnologists the British Antarctic Survey, on Signy Iceland among others, 1972-73 this lake examined.
