Amsel Falls

The Amselfall is a waterfall located in the Saxon Switzerland, about one kilometer north of the Bastion.

At the largest, with around 10 m height gradient step of here clammy -like narrowed Blackbird ground of green brook forms a broad curtain of water, which extends over the Blackbird hole, a collapsed cave pours. The ceiling of this 15 m long cave is formed of sandstone blocks fallen from the walls. In the gorge and in the cave potholes and scour indicate meltwater that zustürzten in older ice ages of the Elbe.

Originally almost all the way through the cave ( first mentioned 1548 ) flowing stream has been conducted in the 19th century over the cave ceiling to the crash site. The waterfall was also similar to the Lichtenhainer waterfall, prepared by an operable small weir penstock for a surge -like outflow to increase the tourist attractiveness. In the just next to the waterfall Amselfallbaude with guest house which opened in 1992, Observatory of the Saxon Switzerland National Park is located. It is closed from April to October in operation in winter.

As one of the first painters who clung to the so-called " Malerweg " the beauty of the Saxon Switzerland, painted Christian Gottlob Hammer the Amselfall.

The Terrace of the Amselfallbaude and Amselfall served in the fall of 1984 as the location for individual scenes of Polizeiruf110 episode " One step too far " (working title: "fear" ) of the GDR television. Involved actors were, inter alia, Herbert Köfer and Jürgen Frohriep. More scenes for this film, among others in Niederrathen (also on the local rock stage ), Hinterhermsdorf and Stolpen. Original Air Date: September 1, 1985.
