Anacortes [ ænəkɔ ɹtɪs ː ] is a city ( City ) in Skagit County of the U.S. state of Washington. At the 2010 census the city had 15,778 inhabitants.

The town was founded in 1877 by Amos Bowman with the opening of a post office. It was named after Anna Curtis, the maiden name of the wife of the founder. The village became a town on 19 May 1891.

The weather is milder than elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest since the Olympic Mountains to catch a lot of precipitation.

Anacortes is a starting point for the recreational boating; here is also a marina.

The town has a ferry port, which is mainly used by the Washington State Ferries. From here, the islands Lopez Iceland, Iceland Shaw, Orcas and San Juan Iceland Iceland as well as via Sidney, Victoria (both in Canada). In Anacortes, there is also a brewery.

Geography

Anacortes is located on Fidalgo Iceland. According to the United States Census Bureau, Anacortes has an area of 36.7 km ², of which 30.5 km ² of land and 6.2 km ² omitted ( = 16.93 %) to water.

Anacortes is the only place in the San Juan Islands, which is accessible by car. It is surrounded to the north by the Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands ( on three sides ) and is separated from the mainland by the Swinomish Channel to the east.
