Anahuacalli Museum

The Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli (also: Museo Anahuacalli ) is a museum of pre-Columbian art in Mexico City. It goes back to Diego Rivera, whose collection is presented by more than 50,000 objects in it. The process leading to construction and installation of the Museo Anahuacalli began in 1942, in 1963 the building was completed and opened in 1964. History

The Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli was originally planned by Diego Rivera as a home and place of accommodation to its pre-Columbian collection. In 1942 he purchased land in San Pablo Tepetla, which was still at that time outside in Mexico City. There he had only the foundation of the house without planning permission to build, on March 30, 1944, he then received the approval for the construction of the Museo Anahuacalli. Rivera planned next to the building for his collection, but should combine a complex architecture, painting, dance, music, theater, arts and crafts and ecology. In August 1955 Diego Rivera, the Banco Nacional de México entrusted with the stewardship of his work and of that of Frida Kahlo, next to the trustee took over the management of the Museo Anahuacalli and the Museo Frida Kahlo. As Rivera died in 1957, the museum was still under construction. His daughter Ruth Rivera and the architect Juan O'Gorman monitored the further construction work. The museum was completed in 1963 with the financial support of Dolores Olmedo and opened in 1964.

Architecture

The building any reception pre-Columbian pyramid architecture. It refers to the shape of the Teocalli, a pyramid with an attached temple. The architecture draws on elements that refer to the Teotihuacan culture, the Maya and the Aztecs. The Museo Anhuacalli was integrated into the surrounding landscape. During the planning phase, Diego Rivera was in contact with Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he discussed the question of how the building could insert into the surrounding nature. The central square was created as a theater. About him there is access to the museum and to a smaller gallery. It was built from the black volcanic rock on which it is located.
