Anapo

The Anapo with Ponte Diddino

Template: Infobox River / Obsolete

The Anapo is a river in Sicily. It rises in the Iblei at Monte Lauro in Palazzolo Acreide, crosses the province of Syracuse and opens into the great harbor of Syracuse in the Ionian Sea.

In ancient times Anapos, the river god, was associated with Kyane, the nymph of the Cianequelle.

The total length of Anapo is 40 km. The underflow is navigable for small boats.

Shortly before the estuary of the Anapo flows together with the small river Cyane. The riparian areas of the two rivers are the only places in Europe where even wild papyrus grow.

Botanists believe that the plants represent remnants of an earlier Mediterranean vegetation, since they are not identical with the papyrus grasses of Egypt. In order to preserve the existence, riparian areas were placed under strict conservation.
