Anaxarete

Anaxarete ( ancient Greek Ἀναξαρέτη ) is in the Greek mythology a Cypriot girl from the family of Teucer.

They rejected the love of the shepherd Iphis back haughty and cruel. He pleaded in vain and finally hanged himself at her door. But Anaxarete was unmoved, so that Aphrodite turned her into a stone.

It is to explain this is a Hellenistic legend of the unusual posture of the cult statue of the goddess in the temple of Salamis. Antoninus Liberalis 39 tells the same story, except that he calls the girl Arsinoe, the spurned lover Arkeophon; Plutarch, Amatorius 20, 12, the girl is named Leukomantis the boy the name Euxynthetos.
