Anbasa ibn Suhaym al-Kalbi

Anbasa ibn al - Kalbi Suhaym (Arabic عنبسة بن سحيم الكلبي, DMG Anbasa ʿ b. Suḥaym al - Kalbi ) was 721-726 Muslim governor of Al -Andalus.

Appointed in August 721, as the successor of Abd ar -Rahman ibn Abd Allah al - Gafiqi, sent Anbasa while taking the following three years, several military expeditions to southern France ( Septimania ), but he was unable to Carcassonne or Nîmes, as his soldiers were more concerned with the looting of simple dirt villages, rather than to besiege the heavily fortified and well-defended cities.

Immediately after his appointment doubled Anbasa taxes for Christians and confiscated Jewish property. These measures caused widespread discontent with the new ruler, isolated, there were minor riots. In the year 722 to Pelayo, a Visigothic nobleman refused to publicly pay taxes to the Muslim rulers. He retired to the mountains of Asturias, back, and gained more allies around. A Muslim force was sent out to search for Pelayo and his men. This was attacked at the Battle of Covadonga in an ambush and, with great loss of life, destroyed.

The victory over the unpopular occupiers quickly made the rounds in Hispania. He also rumors that the victory was won with the help of God. This prompted more and more disaffected Christians and Jews to move to the mountains and to join Pelayo. Duke Pedro of Cantabria ruled as a vassal of the Muslims, joined in the year 722 on the side of the rebels. The following year there was an uprising among the Basques and in the year 724 also Aragón joined the insurgents. In retrospect, these events are considered as the beginning of the Reconquista ( reconquest ) of the total of 770 years of struggle against the Muslim invaders to liberate with the aim of Hispania.

By the death of the Caliph Yazid II and succeeded his brother, Hisham ibn Abd al -Malik, a dynastic struggle among the Muslims came. Finally Anbasa declared in 725 the independence of the occupied territories of Spain by the Umayyad Caliphate remaining. He launched new campaigns in Septimania and conquered the cities of Narbonne, Carcassonne and Nimes. Thousands of people fled to the Kingdom of the Franks.

In the year 726 Anbasa came back to attack the Franks, but he died in battle. His successor as governor was Odhrah ibn Abd Allah al - Fihri, who was replaced after a few months, Yahya ibn Sallama by al - Kalbi. Yahya recognized the illegitimacy of Anbasas policy, particularly in relation to the collection of taxes and the illegal confiscation of property. He lowered the tax rates back to the level of the year 722 and was illegally confiscated property back to its rightful owner.
