Ancient Diocese of Auxerre

The diocese of Auxerre (Latin: Dioecesis Antissiodorensis ) was located in France Roman Catholic diocese based in Auxerre.

History

The diocese of Auxerre was built in the 3rd century. First bishop was Pelerin. In the 17th century the bishopric of Auxerre was the center of Jansenism.

On 29 November 1801, the diocese of Auxerre was dissolved as a result of the Concordat of 1801 by Pope Pius VII with the Papal Bull Qui Christi Domini and the territory was annexed to the diocese of Troyes. The diocese of Auxerre was built again by Pius VII on 10 July 1817. On September 4, 1821 Diocese of Auxerre was dissolved by Pius VII with the Papal Bull nostris sub Plumbo again and the territory was annexed to the archbishopric of Sens.

Since the end of the 4th century the bishopric of Auxerre was the archbishopric of Sens is a suffragan.

In the 17th century it included more than 200 parishes. In the territory of the diocese of Auxerre were twelve abbeys and priories 30.
