Andinobates

Andinobates bombetes is the type species of the genus Andinobates

The genus Andinobates belongs to the family of poison dart frog in South America, which are often referred to as poison dart frogs. The in 2011 by Twomey, Brown et al. furnished genus originally comprised 12 species in the genus Ranitomeya that differed by common morphological features and their geographical distribution of the other species of this genus. Molecular genetic studies corroborated the hypothesis that it was this was a monophyletic group own. A special anatomical feature of Andinobates species are two vertebrae fused together. The net-like markings on the legs of most species of the genus Ranitomeya entirely absent in Andinobates.

The distribution area of Andinobates ranges from the slopes of the northern Andes in Colombia Departamento del Chocó on the way to Central America. The genus Ranitomeya, however, is found only in the Amazon basin. The type species of the genus Andinobates is Andinobates bombetes.
