Andokides (potter)

Andokides (Greek Ἀνδοκίδης ) was an ancient Greek pottery, worked about 540-510 BC in Athens.

Life and work

Andokides is known by nine signed vessels, six Bauchamphoren, a neck amphora, an eye cup and a goblet Crater, more plants can be attributed to him because of the shape. He learned his craft probably in the workshop of Exekias. He stands at the transition from the black - red-figure vase painting for his vases have been painted vases in both techniques. Especially characteristic are called bilinguals, vases, decorated redfigure on one side blackfigure, on the other side. This includes a signed eye cup in Palermo and six unsigned Bauchamphoren. These have been painted by the two painters the black- Lysippides Painter and the red-figure Andokides - painter, but was also being suggested again and again that it constituted only two different characters ways by the same painter. In the workshop of Andokides other painter from the circle of Exekias and Psiax and Epiktetos have worked.

From Andokides next to the vases known a dedication on the Acropolis in Athens; here he consecrated with the potter Mnesiades a bronze statue whose base is obtained with inscription (IG ² No. 627 ): " Μ ] ΝΕΣΙΑΔΕΣ ΚΕΡΑΜΕΥΣ ΜΕ ΚΑΙ ΑΝΔΟΚΙΔΕΣ ΑΝΕΘΕΚΕΝ ". This consecration, one of the few potters at the Acropolis, showing the high social prestige of Andokides.

Maybe Andokides is with the Andokides a favorite inscription on a black-figure hydria of Taleides Painter around 550 BC meant (Paris, Louvre F 38 ).
