Andrea Bregno

Andrea Bregno (* 1418 in Osteno, † 1506 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance.

Life

Bregno was born in the village on Lake Lugano Osteno and initially worked quite the overloaded Lombard style. After he had moved to Rome, however, he accepted the oriented to the ancient forms. In Bregnos a thriving workshop created especially tombs and altars. Bregnos grave monuments usually show niches with statues of saints and carefully designed ornamentation. He was considered the leading Roman sculptors of the second half of the 15th century.
