Andreas Ritzos

Andreas Ritzos (* 1421 in Heraklion, † 1492; Andreas Ritsos ) was a Greek icon painter.

Life and work

Ritzos was born in Heraklion on the island of Crete, the son of a goldsmith. He is considered the greatest Cretan painters of the second half of the 15th century. His works, as well as those of the painter Angelos, were role models for future generations of icon painters. Ritzos was based on the Byzantine style, but left in some works also the Italian style of painting of the 14th century incorporated. He is mentioned in a document by the year 1492. His son Nikolaos ( 1446-1503 ) was also hagiographers.
