Andreas Schelfhout

Andreas Schelfhout ( born February 16, 1787 The Hague, † April 19, 1870 ) was a Dutch painter.

Schelfhout was a student of theater painter Johannes Breckenheimer, but specialized in landscape painting. At age 28 he managed with a " winter wonderland " his artistic breakthrough.

In addition to the landscapes of his native Schelfhout his life themed repeatedly winter landscapes. In his early work dominated the style of the old masters, but after a few years Schelfhout had found his own style and - his contemporaries connected artistically - especially in his winter landscapes. He has predominantly small paintings painted; this type of painting why they are called in painter circles as " Schelfhoutjes ". Pictures of him have the Fodor Museum in Amsterdam and the museums of Haarlem, Rotterdam, Enschede and Ghent.

At the age of 83 years the painter Andreas Schelfhout died on 19 April 1870 in The Hague. The painter and graphic Lodewijk Schelfhout (1881-1943) is a grandson.
