Andreas Stihl

Andreas Stihl ( born November 10, 1896 in Zurich, † 14 January 1973 by Rohrbronn, today Remshalden ) was a German -Swiss entrepreneur and inventor in the field of chain saws.

Life

Stihl attended elementary school in Zurich. After that he went to relatives in Germany, where he first attended secondary school singing Hohentwiel, higher secondary school in Dusseldorf top Kassel. From 1915 to 1917 he served in the German army and was wounded several times. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical College in Eisenach, where he in 1920, the engineering exam was. Together with Carl hollow he ran from 1923 to 1926 a small engineering firm that was active without much success in the field of steam engines.

In 1926 Stihl founded in Stuttgart, A. Stihl engineering office, which he headed until his death. Designed at the beginning and he constructed low-pressure steam boiler. But in 1926 he invented the first electric chain saw in the world, and three years later he built his first gasoline-powered chainsaw. In the 1930s, with the chainsaws he achieved his breakthrough with large export figures. By 1949 he was able to achieve a profit of 3.4 million euro with about 200 employees.

Andreas Stihl had four children with his first wife Mia - including Eva Mayr- Stihl and Hans Peter Stihl, who took over management of the company after the death of his father, and remained until 2002 the Board. Andreas Stihl second wife was Hannelore Stihl (* 1927, † 2009 Rohrbronn ).
