Andrew Báthory

Andrei Bathory ( András Báthory * 1563 Szilágysomlyó ( Şimleu Silvaniei ); † October 31, 1599 in Csikszentdomokos (Romanian: Sandominic ) in Transylvania ) was Cardinal, sovereign over Transylvania and the son of Margit Majláth and András Báthory (Captain of Satu Mare ).

Life

Growing up in the Polish royal court under King Stephen Báthory, his ecclesiastical career began early, he was named in his early years a cardinal. 1583 and 1586 he visited the Vatican in Rome. In 1583 he was prothonotary, 1584 and 1589 Cardinal Prince-Bishop of Warmia.

On March 30, 1599 he was given dominion over Transylvania, who abandoned his relative Sigismund Báthory in favor of András. The Wallachian voivode Mihai Petrascu, called " the Brave " Michael the Brave, took advantage of the enormous tension of the nobility in Transylvania and grabbed András with his army and defeated it with the help of the Székely on October 18, 1599 at the Battle of Schellenberg in Sibiu.
