Andrey Andreyevich Smirnov

Andrei Smirnov (Russian: Андрей Андреевич Смирнов; * October 15, 1905 in Moscow, † 26 February 1982) was a Soviet politician ( CPSU ) and diplomat. He was assistant secretary of state, as well as Soviet Ambassador to the Republic of Austria, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Turkey.

Life

Smirnov studied law and economics in planning Leningrad. In 1936 he entered the diplomatic service of the Soviet Union. From 1937 until the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 21 June 1941 had the severance of diplomatic relations with the consequence was Smirnov press attaché or counselor of the Soviet Embassy in Berlin. From June 1941 to September 1943 he was Soviet ambassador in Tehran. Then he headed from 1943 to 1949 III. European Department of the People's Commissariat or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. In 1945, he worked as a consultant for the Soviet military administration in Germany. From 1946 to 1949 he also served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the RSFSR. Smirnov was regarded as an expert on issues of Germany as well as Central and Eastern Europe policy. He was a member of the Soviet delegations at the Allied conferences at Teheran in 1943, London in 1947 and Paris in 1949.

From March to October 1956, he was the Soviet ambassador in Vienna, October 1956-May 1966 Ambassador in Bonn and then from May 1966 to June 1969 Ambassador in Ankara. From 1969 to 1973 he was one of the deputy foreign ministers of the USSR. From 1970 to 1973 he served as Chairman of the Soviet Commission for UNESCO.

1981/82 Smirnov was a candidate of the Central Committee of the CPSU.
