Andrey Vilkitsky

Andrei Ippolitowitsch Wilkizki (Russian: Андрей Ипполитович Вилькицкий; * 1 Junijul / June 13 1858greg near Minsk, .. .. † 26 Februarjul / March 11 1913greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian hydrographer and surveyor.

By 1880 Wilkizki graduated from the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg.

In 1887 he performed on Novaya Zemlya gravity studies. With interruptions, he oversaw 1894-1901 hydrographic studies in the delta of Pechora and Yenisei.

From 1907 until the end of his life Wilkizki worked in the administration. He devoted his life to the safety of navigation. So he established, for example, methods for calculating runoff hydrographs, dealt with the publication of modern charts, the construction of lighthouses and the creation of navigation marks. Wilkizkis studies had great influence on the Russian Navy.

After Wilkizki the three Wilkizki Islands and the archipelago Wilkizki were named.

Andrei Wilkizki was the father of naval officer and hydrographer Boris Wilkizki.
