Andrzej Śliwiński

Andrzej Józef Sliwinski ( born January 6, 1939 in Werblinia, Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, † 9 September 2009 in Elblag, Warmia and Mazury, Poland) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Elbląg.

Life

Andrzej Śliwiński studied from 1956 to 1961 at the Seminary of the Diocese of Kulm in Chelmno ( Vistula ) and received on 17 December 1961, the ordination. After his Vicariate, he studied from 1964 to 1968 at the Catholic University of Lublin and was awarded his doctorate in Catholic dogma. From 1970 to 1986 he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Kulm.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Arindela 1986 and appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Chelmno. The archbishop of Warsaw, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, donated to him on 15 June 1986, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Marian Przykucki, Bishop of Kulm, and Henryk Muszynski, Auxiliary Bishop of Chelmno. He was appointed the first bishop of the newly established Diocese of Elbląg 1992.

Śliwiński was chaplain of the Polish athletes. From 1987 to 2006 he was president of the Association of Catholic Athletes of the Republic of Poland.

In 2003 he had at the behest of the Vatican to resign from his office of bishop, because he had caused a car accident under the influence of alcohol.
