Andy Ducat

Andrew "Andy" Ducat ( born February 16, 1886 in Brixton, London, † July 23, 1942 in St John 's Wood, London ) was an English cricket and football players. He is one of the few athletes who have represented England internationally in both sports. He was also active in both sports as a coach.

Career

Cricket

Although Ducat was born in Brixton, he grew up in Southend. Since 1906 at The Oval, he quickly became part of the local team, playing alongside Tom Hayward, Jack Hobbs and Ernest Hayes.

As a batsman of Surrey County Cricket Club, he was known and named in 1920 as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year. However, he was again slowed by injuries. 1912 ended almost a broken leg his career, in 1924 he missed the entire season after a broken arm.

However, he could also shine through excellent results: 1928 reach him within six weeks of 994 runs. His only appearance in a Test match for England he had in 1921. This was very successful, however, because he had to retire early in both innings.

Until 1931 Ducat played cricket before he worked as a cricket coach at the Eton College for five years.

Football

Ducat began his football career outside the leagues system at Southend United, before he to Woolwich Arsenal (now Arsenal ) joined the First Division in 1905. First, he played as a center forward, but was occasionally used from the 1906/ 07 season as a right outer rotor and even at right-back. From 1907 /08 starting players, he received his first invitation to an international match in England on 12 February 1910. The game was won 6-1 against Ireland in Belfast. On his second international appearance on 14 March of the same year, he managed to make the score 1-0 Final against Wales.

1912 Ducat was sold for £ 1,000 from stuck in financial difficulties Arsenal Aston Villa. Recovered from a broken leg suffered in 1912, he made it to the root player and captain of the team. 1920 succeeded in winning the FA Cup and Ducat was recalled to the national team.

Ducat 1921 moved to Fulham, where he after his retirement as a player successor Philip Kelso, who had trained him in his time at Arsenal was founded in 1924 on the bench. However, the team came under his guidance in trouble and he was released in 1926. Thus he became the first coach of the club, which is against this fate.

From 1936 Ducat worked primarily as a sports reporter. While an entertainment, on 23 July 1942, the Lord's Cricket Ground in London, he collapsed and died.
