Ang Duong

Preah Bat Ang Duong (Ang Duang; Khmer: ព្រះបាទ អង្គ ឌួ ង; * 1796 in Oudong, † May 19, 1860 ) was from 1848 until his death King of Cambodia and was followed by his niece, Queen Ang Mei (r. 1835-1847 ), on the throne. Ang Duong is revered as a great Cambodian king who saved the country both before complete conquest as well as from deep poverty led to a relative prosperity.

Ang Duong was the son of King Narayana III. ( Ang Eng, reg. 1779-1796 ) and his concubine Thai Red ( "Queen Vara " ), in 1793 during a stay in Bangkok the king took as a concubine and about died in 1869.

Literary work

King Ang Duong was a poet and a great author Cambodian classical works. Long after his death, his texts were used in textbooks to teach the Cambodian language. Especially his short stories Kakey and Kangrey are widely used in Cambodian society.

Kakey is a story about an unfaithful wife while Kangrey embodies the exact opposite. She sacrifices herself in the truest sense of the word for her husband. This found its way into the vocabulary of Cambodian everyday language in which kakey for an unfaithful wife and kangrey stand for the ever- faithful companion.

Historical Background

Ang Duong was the youngest brother of King Ang Chang (reigned 1797-1835 ). 1811 Ang Duong fled with two of his brothers during a Vietnamese invasion to Bangkok as the Thai government was far less oppressive than that of the Vietnamese. The Thais placed Duong 1835 as Gourverneur Siem Reap province, which had been dominated by the Thais since 1794. Apparently Ang Duong was three years later bribed by the Vietnamese, who promised him the throne of Cambodia. The Siamese took him then to Bangkok and left him allegiance to King Rama III. (reigned 1824-1851 ) swear that had proved earlier that he could put to death unfaithful followers.

1841 Ang Duong was able to return with a powerful Siamese army to Cambodia, which sell the Vietnamese from Cambodia and would restore political influence in Vietnam. While the Siamese and the Vietnamese were fighting, trying Ang Duong trailer from the ancient Cambodian elite to rally to restore the old rule of the Khmer. When the Vietnamese had to withdraw from Cambodia in 1847, translated the Siamese Ang Duong to the throne and made the capital in Udong, north of Phnom Penh, had reigned from where Chan and Mei under Vietnamese sovereignty. Towards the end of his reign, he would strike down a revolt of the Cham successfully.

During the reign of Ang Duongs the land was to be swallowed always in danger of its neighbors Siam and Vietnam ( Annam ). Therefore, the king turned to France, meanwhile, " Emperor " Napoleon III. (r. 1852-1870 ) to patronage that was prepared only too happy to grant this, but it might as easily incorporate Cambodia into its Indochinese possessions, but what the Siamese officials could prevent first. 1863 yet the "Protectorate of Cambodia " was created, which should be about 90 years. Family

King Ang Duong was the father of kings Norodom I. (1834-1904) and Sisowath ( 1840-1927 ). He is also the great-grandfather of King Sihanouk.

Under current Cambodian Constitution only descendants Ang Duongs are approved for the throne of the country.
