Anil Kumar Bhattacharya

Anil Kumar Bhattacharya ( born April 1, 1915 in Bhatpara, District 24 Parganas, West Bengal, † 17 July 1996) was an Indian statistician.

Life

Bhattacharya studied at the Calcutta University with a Master 's degree in 1938. Among his teachers were Friedrich Wilhelm Levi and RC Bose. After he was staff of PC Mahalanobis at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI ), which at that time belonged to the University of Calcutta. From 1941 he taught there and was one of his students, among others, CR Rao. He was from late 1943 to 1946 statistician for the government in Bihar, but then returned to the ISI and was a professor at the Presidency College and from 1949 Head of the Statistics Department. In 1974 he retired and then taught at the Ramakrishna Mission Residential College.

He is known for his work on the deviation of statistical distributions of each other, he introduced the Bhattacharya coefficient and the Bhattacharya distance .. With similar questions previously addressed his teacher Mahalanobis, who introduced named after him Mahalanobis distance in 1936.

He also dealt with extensions of the Cramér -Rao inequality and the characterization of bivariate normal distributions.
